Microblading FAQ

Microblading

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at October 20th, 2022

If you’ve never experienced a microblading treatment, you probably have many questions about the process. Maybe you’ve had friends or family members recommend the treatment, but you’re not quite clear on how it all works. Being that it’s a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo, there are a few important details you’ll need to know before scheduling your appointment. Here are a few answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about microblading!

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing procedure that helps optically volumize eyebrows to make them look fuller. Unlike a permanent tattoo, pigmentation from microblading lasts up to three years. With that said, frequent touch-up appointments will be necessary to maintain your preferred brow shade. The process involves a hand-held microblade tool containing needles that lightly break into the topmost layers of your skin.

Microblading FAQ - Does the Procedure Hurt?

It’s difficult to definitively determine how irritating microblading can be since everyone has a different level of pain tolerance. Generally speaking, the procedure may be slightly irritating for some, akin to the feeling of a cat scratch or eyebrow tweezing. Even so, the pain should never feel unbearable; more than anything, it may feel a bit uncomfortable. However, you may request your brow artist to apply numbing gel if they allow it.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

Depending on your skin type, microblading can last up to an average of 1-3 years. Generally speaking, people with oily skin may need to schedule more touch-up appointments to prevent faster fading. Regardless of your skin type, once you reach your three-year mark, it will be time to schedule your follow-up appointment. After that, touch-up appointments every 8-12 months will maintain your brow’s preferred shade.

Microblading FAQ - What Happens After the Appointment?

Dark shading, mild swelling, and scabbing are all normal for the first week after your microblade procedure. Your brow artist will provide you with specific microblading aftercare instructions, but there are some general guidelines that are important to follow:
  • Gingerly wash your eyebrows with a fingertip using antibacterial soap and water for 10 seconds. Proceed to carefully pat them dry when you’re finished. Only do this after your 10-day healing period has ended.
  • Avoid water directly to your face for 7-10 days after the procedure
  • Try not to pick at your scabs
  • Use small amounts of moisturizing ointments
  • Avoid wearing makeup while your brows heal
  • Avoid tanning or being in direct sunlight for at least four weeks after the procedure
  • Try not to sleep on your face for at least ten days after microblading
  • Avoid using peels and facial scrubs for at least four weeks after the procedure
