Sun-Damaged Skin Treatment

Facial, Skin Care

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at May 31st, 2022

With summer just around the corner, it’s tempting to bask in the sun and spend some time outdoors. However, if you’re not careful, spending too much time in the sun could lead to skin damage; this damage goes beyond typical sunburns: sun-damaged skin can contribute to wrinkles, uneven skin textures, or even skin cancer. Here’s what you can do to protect your skin from the sun and ways to treat it if you notice any previous signs of damage.

What is Sun-Damaged Skin?

Sometimes known as photoaging, solar damage, or photodamage, sun-damaged skin is DNA augmentation that affects your skin cells. The sun can significantly damage your skin, even if you don’t experience a sunburn, which can lead to serious underlying health conditions like skin cancer. Signs of sun-damaged skin include wrinkles, broken capillaries, uneven skin texture, or brown spots. Thus, it’s very important to take the necessary precautions to protect your skin.

Summer Skin Care

Sunscreen

Paired with other protective measures, sunscreen will be your first line of defense against the sun’s harmful rays. Make it a habit to often apply sunscreen on exposed skin, even during the winter months. Make sure you use sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays and an SPF of at least 30.

Clothing

You should also wear protective clothing that covers up exposed skin. If it’s possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. If it’s too hot to wear longer clothing, try to wear tightly woven T-shirts or beach cover-ups.

Shade

Sometimes, the best way to protect your skin from sun damage is to use natural resources like shade. Paired with sunscreen and protective clothing, sitting under a tree, umbrella, or shelter can significantly reduce the chance of skin damage.

Sun-Damaged Skin Treatment

Creams and Gels

Topical creams and gels can help treat sun-damaged skin. Investing in products containing ingredients like retinoids, exfoliants, lightening agents, and Vitamin C can greatly decrease skin degeneration. However, be extremely careful when using these products to avoid further sun damage, as these products may make your skin extremely susceptible to sun damage. Read the instructions and primarily use them in the evening and wear sunblock during the day.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a non-surgical procedure that removes the outer layer of the skin to allow new skin to reach the surface. Performed by a dermatologist, chemical peels vary in treatment depth, resulting in fluctuating recovery times. Chemical peels can improve fine lines, and combat uneven pigmentation.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy treatments create short pulses of concentrated light that target the outermost layers of the skin to let new skin come to the surface. There are many different types of laser therapy, and people can use many of them on other body surfaces. Laser therapy is particularly effective for combating brown and red lesions, reducing the appearance of discoloration.

Facial Treatments

If you feel like your skin is sun-damaged or in need of some revitalizing treatment, consider getting a facial! Facials can remove dead skin, reduce uneven pigmentation, and promote collagen production. One specific facial known as microdermabrasion can specifically treat wrinkles caused by sun damage.

*Please be aware, that attentive care should be taken after any treatments or application of any chemicals/acids that break down the skin in order to help it repair. All of these treatments break down the skin in order for you to aid in proper healing and repair - this means avoiding the sun altogether until treatment is complete or until the skin is healed and continually wearing sunscreen anytime there is sun exposure.
