My Eyelash Extensions Feel Crunchy; What's the Deal?

Eyelash Extensions

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at May 22nd, 2022

Whether it’s your first time receiving eyelash extensions or you’re used to the application process, a “crunchy” sensation can understandably feel unnerving. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why do my eyelash extensions feel crunchy,?” some startling notions may run through your head. Does it mean you have an eye infection? Were your extensions applied incorrectly? Is a crunchy sensation normal? Here’s what you need to know if you experience crunchy eyelash extensions.

Are Crunchy Extensions Normal?

Crunchy extensions could be caused by outdated extension material, incorrect diameter choice, incorrect number of lashes placed, improper glue use, incorrect glue for the environment, and incorrect aftercare. It could be one of these or a combination along with other variables, and an experienced eyelash artist will not make these mistakes.

Regularly Clean Your Eyelash Extensions

You can prevent crunchy extensions by regularly cleaning your eyelashes. Since eyelash extensions are attached using an adhesive, this can mix with your natural oils, makeup, and dirt. Left uncleaned, this can lead to eye conditions like blepharitis or break down your extension’s adhesive, resulting in premature deterioration. To properly clean your eyelash extensions, invest in an eyelash extension cleanser, wash your lashes with water, use a soft spoolie brush, and utilize oil-free makeup remover.

Signs of Improper Application

  • Pain During or After Application

You should never feel pain during or after your eyelash extension appointment. Granted, allergic reactions to the adhesive are an occasional occurrence. However, a certified lash technician will know to perform a patch test if you mention a history of sensitive skin. They will also take all the necessary precautions to ensure none of the chemicals get into your eyes. A medical professional should immediately address any signs of burning, irritation, or pain after the application.
  • Difficulty Brushing Your Lashes

Brushing is a required part of your aftercare routine. Thus, if your eyelash extensions prohibit you from brushing them at any point, that should be an immediate concern. If your lashes keep sticking together or you notice any tenderness while brushing them, that could be a sign of improper extension application.
  • Your Lashes Have a Clumpy or Crusty Appearance

As mentioned previously, a “crunchy” sensation is normal for the first few hours after application. Since extensions are attached using an adhesive, it can take about 24-48 hours for your lashes to settle. However, if this continues for more than a few days, something isn’t right; this is especially true if they look clumpy and/or crusty, along with a “crunchy” sensation.
