Alright, picture this, you’ve just received gorgeous eyelash extensions, and you can’t wait to show them off! You get home and start prepping for your girl’s night out, and your lashes look fabulous. However, you’re struck with fear, and you realize you didn’t listen/spaced out when the lash artist explained how to clean lash extensions and what you should do for lash home care! Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. We want your beautiful lashes to look great and last as long as they can. Whether you have stylized cat eyelash extensions, hybrid eyelash extensions, or something more traditional, this article will cover the basic home care tips you should know.

Aftercare Tips

When we talk about aftercare and home care tips for healthy eyelash extensions, it must be stressed that eyelash extensions are particularly vulnerable in the first 24-48 hours after the application. The eyelash extension application adhesive is not entirely cured until 1-2 days after the eyelash artist has completed their work. Just to keep it fresh in your mind, here are some of the biggest DO NOTS after your eyelash extension appointment:
  • Stay away from heat - saunas, hot showers, hot ovens, any heat/steam can loosen the adhesive’s bond and cause the lashes to lose their shape or, worse, fall off entirely.
  • Do not apply cosmetics to the freshly applied lashes
  • Do not submerge the lashes in water or expose them to rainy conditions
  • Do not pick or attempt to manipulate the lashes with your fingers to reshape them
  • Try not to sleep on your stomach/face.

How to Clean Eyelash Extensions Safely and Effectively

Many people ask, “Why clean my eyelash extensions? What gets on them in between my visits to the lash salon?” - this is a good question. The answer is that between your sessions, dead skin cells, oils, dirt, dust, and makeup residue can collect on your eyelash extensions, which prevent them from looking their best and can damage the adhesive bond. This is why regularly cleaning your eyelash extensions is an important home care precaution. It's also important to clean and brush lashes regularly to maintain your natural lashes’ health and hygiene. Brushing and cleaning will stimulate hair follicles for growth while reducing the risk of infections.

Removing Makeup from Eyelash Extensions

Yes, you CAN wear lash makeup with lash extensions; however, it is advised to use makeups/mascara that are not oil-based or alcohol-based, as these products can cause premature breakdown of the lash adhesive on the extensions. It’s very important not to let eye makeup stay on any longer than it has to. You DO NOT want to fall asleep with your makeup on and cause irritation to your lashes. To safely clean your eye makeup at the end of the day, lightly splash some lukewarm water around your eyes and soften the area. Apply an oil-free/alcohol-free makeup remover around your eyes and against your upper and lower eyelid lines. Use a clean mascara wand, a lint-free sponge, or your finger to remove makeup, dirt, debris. Always clean/stroke in a downward angle, going with the direction of hair growth. Never rub or push upwards, as this could pull on your extensions and pop them off. To get in between lashes, use a microfiber wand made for eyelash extensions. Gently splash more warm water onto the area to rinse, and repeat this until all eye makeup is washed away. Next, apply some oil-free foaming cleanser to a soft eye brush and carefully wash away mascara in a downward motion - do not go back and forth with the brush as this is likely to damage the extensions. After that, pat the lashes and dry them and finish them by providing lift with a clean lash brush! There, you’re done! Now you don’t have to worry about how to clean lash extensions.
