Eyelash Extensions

What are the long-term side effects eyelash extensions have? The answer varies or depends. It is completely dependent on your genetic predisposition, general hygiene/maintenance routine and most importantly, it is dependent on the expertise and technicality of the eyelash extension process. Prior to getting lash extensions, it’s important to know your body. To understand what will irritate your eyes and what factors will come into play to make you more susceptible to irritation. It is also important to get consultations from professionals, whether this means seeing an ophthalmologist, optician, optometrist, generalist, and most importantly an eyelash extension technician. Do your research and interview your eyelash technician to determine what types, if any, of side effects eyelash extensions may have on you. Prior to getting the service done, the best thing you can do for your eyes is select a professional that is well-trained and truly cares about the well-being of your lashes. If all this is done properly and your extensions are well maintained and appropriately fitted for your natural lashes, then there should be no long-term effect of getting eyelash extensions. However, it is always recommended to take before and after images of your lashes in order to have a baseline of natural lash health. Your eyelash technician will be able to evaluate the health of your natural lashes during each session and take pictures to update you along the way. The flip side to this story is, you do minimal research and select an eyelash technician that gives you what you want without tailoring the specs to your individual natural lashes. Even if the extensions are not clumped, they could be too long or too heavy. If the lashes are too long or too heavy and you have them for a certain duration of time, there is the risk of traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is caused by tension or pulling of hair for a long duration of time, causing hair loss. The hair loss caused by this could become permanent if not corrected in time. Other long-term effects caused by improper techniques are infections due to clumping of glue causing a collection of bacteria and dust, irritability, and potential corneal abrasions. To reduce the risk of any long-term side effects, it is highly recommended that you get informed, do research, and select a well-trained eyelash technician.
