Insights, Lash Lifting

Lately, I’ve been hearing more and more women requesting real mink lashes and I have been shutting them down left and right. I think it’s desirable to some women because it’s a really novel trend that makes you feel like you’re a movie star. Real mink lashes are very soft and provide a desirable fluttery look. However, the super soft lashes come with a price. They are more difficult to work, requiring more time for application, they are much more brittle than their counterparts, causing them to snap in half, break, or bend with a pinch of your fingers, and the sizing isn’t always consistent (because they are natural, you can’t manufacture perfection in nature). So ladies if you’re lashes look too perfect, you’re most likely not getting real mink.
Side note: I had a lady come into my shop last week stating she wanted real mink because that’s what another salon had placed on her lashes, we looked at her lashes and realized quickly they were faux/synthetic. We knew this because her extensions were strong, thick, and consistently long, about 15mm in length. If you have experience with real mink lashes you will quickly find out that it’s pretty difficult to get real mink lashes to look exactly the same from inner corner to outer corner with a C curl .20 mm thickness at a 15mm length. Ladies, don’t let salons dupe you into paying extra.
Alongside these issues, there’s the topic of controversy surrounding the acquisition of the fur. Most fur is acquired from mink farms, where mink are bred, cared for, and then euthanized for their fur. The argument can be made for humane practices on some farms as well as inhumane practices on others. There is too much ambiguity and uncertainty as to how the mink are treated and not all farms follow the same practices and guidelines regardless of regulation. Feel free to google search or watch videos on the opposing sides. Some videos will show clean, perfect living conditions (which kind of seems too perfect, like it’s staged) while others show undercover horrible conditions and deaths.
Because of the innate issues of real mink lashes stated above as well as the controversy surrounding the fur, I do not offer it at my shop. I believe that if you pay for a service, we should be able to guarantee the results and the outcome; I don’t believe I can do that with real mink due to the brittleness. Also, I have two fur babies, I love animals, and I can’t support the practice with all its ambiguity. Yes, I realize I am losing out on the revenue stream, but that’s okay because I only have one life and I want to live it doing what I know is right. Nothing should dictate your morals but your morals.
