What Are Microblading Touch-Ups?

Microblading

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at July 15th, 2024

You might think the process is complete when you walk out of the microblading salon with freshly sculpted brows. However, the treatment is a two-step process that requires a follow-up touch-up to perfect your results; this touch-up appointment is essential to ensure your brows look their best and last as long as possible.  Let’s dive into why microblading touch-ups are crucial and why skipping them is not an option!

What are Microblading Touch-Ups?

A microblading touch-up is the second part of your brow transformation. It typically takes place 4 to 8 weeks after your initial session. During this appointment, your artist will assess how your brows have healed and correct any irregularities, such as patchiness or uneven pigment retention. Think of this touch-up as the "perfecting session," where your artist refines the results to ensure flawless brows. After your first microblading session, your skin goes through a healing process that can take up to two weeks. During this time, your brows may darken, scab, and even lose some pigment as they heal; this is completely normal! Everyone's skin heals differently, and some areas may not retain pigment as well as others. A touch-up lets your artist fix gaps or fading and bring your brows back to life. At your touch-up appointment, your artist will go over any hair-like strokes that may not have healed properly and redefine your brows to ensure they look even and crisp. This session ensures your brows retain their shape, color, and fullness long after completing the healing process.

What Happens If I Skip My Touch-Up?

Skipping your touch-up may be tempting if your brows look decent after the initial healing period. But skipping this crucial step can cause your brows to fade faster than they should. The pigment may fade unevenly without a touch-up, and your brows might not last as long as they could. If you skip the touch-up, your brows may lose their definition within 4 to 8 months—far sooner than the usual 1 to 3 years that properly maintained microblading can last. The touch-up session is typically much quicker than the initial procedure. Depending on the work that needs to be done, your appointment can last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The healing process afterward is also shorter, with less scabbing and a recovery time of just 5 to 7 days. Here’s why skipping your microblading touch-up isn’t worth it:
  • Longer-Lasting Results: A touch-up helps your brows last up to 3 years, compared to just a few months if skipped.
  • Even Pigment Distribution: The touch-up ensures any uneven fading is corrected.
  • Perfect Shape: Your brows will stay defined and shaped as you want.
  • Investment Protection: You’ve already invested in beautiful brows, so don’t let them fade prematurely!

How Often Should I Get Touch-Ups?

Aside from the initial touch-up, you'll likely need additional touch-ups every 12 to 18 months to maintain the color and shape of your brows. Factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and sun exposure can all affect how often you'll need a refresh. If you have oily skin or spend a lot of time outdoors, you may need touch-ups more frequently.
