Can Eyebrow Threading Cause Breakouts?

Eyebrow Threading

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at November 30th, 2022

Eyebrow threading is a popular beauty treatment because it is safe and quick, and the results are fantastic, especially when compared to plucking, tweezing, or waxing at home! However, some people may avoid eyebrow threading because they believe it can cause breakouts, but is this accurate or are these fears unfounded? Keep reading to learn what variables/circumstances can cause eyebrow-threading breakouts and how to minimize the breakout if one happens.

Can You Get Breakouts from Eyebrow Threading?

The short answer is yes; you can get breakouts from eyebrow threading. While eyebrow threading is completely safe and one of the most accurate ways to get your brows done, breakouts can still happen.  There's no need to worry if you experience a fleeting breakout after eyebrow threading. If this happens to you frequently, you can do a few things to prevent it in the future.

Why Does Eyebrow Threading Cause Breakouts?

If you’re experiencing breakouts after threading, it could mean that your follicles are irritated or your pores are clogged. When you get your eyebrows threaded, you’re pulling hairs from their follicles, which can irritate the skin, and this can cause any existing acne to become inflamed underneath your skin, contributing to breakouts. Threading breakouts can also happen if there is bacteria on your face. When the hair is pulled out of the follicle, your pores open up, allowing bacteria to creep into your skin. But do not fear. We have ways to address these problems!

How to Minimize Breakouts from Eyebrow Threading

Luckily, there are many precautions you can take to prevent breakouts after threading, especially if you experience them frequently. It’s essential to make sure your face is clean before getting your eyebrows threaded. It’s a good idea to exfoliate your face before getting your eyebrows threaded, as this will remove any bacteria that could get into your pores.  Similarly, don't touch your face after you get your eyebrows threaded! Your hands carry a lot of bacteria, and touching your face when your pores are still open is another way bacteria can get in. Many salons use a cooling applicant or aloe-based gel to calm your skin and avoid irritation. While you shouldn’t exfoliate or use products immediately after treatment, you should generally avoid moisturizers and use aloe-based products. Using these in your daily routine limits irritation and minimizes breakouts. Salons may also have witch hazel, a product that minimizes breakouts, to help you avoid this problem. If you've tried cleansing beforehand, witch hazel/aloe after the service, and you're still breaking out, we recommend coming in with a clean face and not doing anything after threading. Wait until your normal, end-of-the-day routine to cleanse. A change in routine could be causing breakouts. You can also apply some gentle, topical salicylic acid on the area at the end of the day.
