How to Keep Lash Extensions From Falling Out

Eyelash Extensions

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at April 23rd, 2022

Eyelash extensions are a fabulously-stylish way to enhance your natural lashes! Thus, upon application of your extensions, it’s a good idea to maintain their longevity and prevent them from falling out prematurely so you can enjoy them as long as possible. Certain factors like playing with your extensions, using the incorrect brush, or sleeping on your stomach could lead to lash damage. To prevent your eyelash extensions from falling out, here’s a general guide to help you care for them.

Leave Them Alone!

The best way to keep your eyelash extensions from falling out is to leave them alone. It’s okay if they don’t feel completely comfortable for the first few days after application. Try your best to let them acclimate to your natural lashes to increase overall comfort. In the meantime, don’t try to pick at them or remove them yourself. Otherwise, you could accidentally damage your natural lashes. However, It's okay to gently brush them in order to maintain uniformity and cleanliness

Try to Sleep on Your Back

If you’re a stomach or side sleeper, this may be difficult; however, if it’s at all possible, try your best to sleep on your back. Sleeping on your stomach or side may accidentally damage your freshly applied extensions, and this is especially true for the first 48 hours after application. Sleeping on your back may increase the longevity of your eyelash extensions.

Wash Your Eyelashes Correctly

Although you want to avoid playing with your eyelash extensions, it’s very important to wash them every day after the 24-48hr curing time. Following the first 48 hours after applying your extensions, residue will begin to build up around your lash line. Left unchecked, this could lead to eye infections or other related issues. To wash your eyelash extensions, choose from one of the following options:
  1. Wash your extensions with distilled water or a special eyelash extension cleanser.
  2. When taking a shower, let the water gently run over your eyes.
  3. Gently brush your eyelash extensions with a soft bristle brush.
  4. Dry your lashes with a gentle cool breeze from your hairdryer or mini fan.

Wear Makeup With Caution

As a general rule, try your best to be selective with your makeup. Avoid waterproof mascara at all costs, as the product can soften the adhesive on your extensions. If wearing an approved eyelash extension mascara, make sure to apply from the middle of the extension to the tip. Do not start at the base as it could pop off the extension or cause the mascara to bind to glue and cause clumping. It’s okay to wear water-based eyeliner as long as it’s not waterproof and you’re gentle when removing your makeup at the end of your day. Also, try to avoid powder-based eyeshadow to keep clumps from getting stuck on your eyelash extensions.

Brush Your Eyelash Extensions

Make sure you brush your eyelash extensions every morning to maintain their longevity. For extensions, it’s best to use a dry, clean spoolie wand that you’d traditionally use to apply mascara. Use a clean finger to support your eyelashes while brushing. To properly brush your eyelash extensions, close whichever eye you’re not using and place the spoolie on top of your lashes. Proceed to roll the spoolie brush over your extensions and lashes.  Chic Lash Boutique is one of Houston's best lash extension salons!
