Eyelash Extension Allergic Reaction - Understand the Signs

Eyelash Extensions

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at March 31st, 2022

Normally, eyelash extensions accentuate your eyes with a natural yet stylish design. However, some people may experience an eyelash extension allergic reaction under certain circumstances. If an allergic reaction occurs, an eyelash professional should immediately remove the eyelash extensions, and symptoms should be treated.  Allergic reactions are rare, and experienced eyelash artists will ask their clients if they have any known allergies before the treatment is given. However, the unexpected can happen, and people develop allergies at different stages in life, leading to unpleasant surprises.

Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction

Like many contact allergies, eyelash extension allergic reactions symptoms resemble a condition known as contact dermatitis. Symptoms usually appear a few minutes or hours after application of the extensions. An allergic reaction can occur in one or both eyes, with one side being more severe than the other. The following symptoms can occur in the eyes or eyelids after the placement of eyelash extensions:
  • Redness
  • Tearing
  • Itchiness
  • Swelling
  • Itchiness

Potential Allergens

Most allergic reactions occur because of the bonding glue that attaches extensions to the eyelashes; some of these adhesives contain ingredients like formaldehyde, benzoic acid, or lead. If the glue leaks onto the eyelid or eye, the area may develop an allergic reaction.  Before your appointment, always ask your last artist about the ingredients in the glue they’re using. If you are allergic to waterproof makeup, you will most likely be allergic to eyelash extension glue. If possible, request formaldehyde-free glue if you know you have sensitive skin. Avoid washing your face immediately after your eyelash extensions have been applied to let the glue bond and set properly.

Eyelash Extension Allergic Reaction - Treatments

Most allergic reactions to eyelash extension adhesives are mild, so you should be able to combat the symptoms at home after your artist has provided you with instructions. Some basic rules to follow are:
  • Try not to rub your eyes if they feel itchy, and invest in over-the-counter eye drops, antihistamines, and hydrocortisone ointment or cream.
  • If symptoms persist for a prolonged time, interrupt your quality of life, or make it difficult to perform basic bodily functions such as breathing, seek professional medical attention immediately.

Prevention - Always See a Professional!

A professional, licensed eyelash artist will always take every precaution to prevent an allergic reaction from occurring. Allergic reactions are more likely to happen when nonprofessionals fail to use sanitary equipment or maintain a clean work area.  During the treatment session, keep your eyes closed to make sure the glue doesn’t drip into your eyes, and the vapors don’t irritate the surrounding area. Do some research ahead of time if you have an underlying health condition that may elevate the risk of an allergic reaction.  At Chic Lash Boutique, all of our lash artists have years of training and experience and will work with you to best avoid any type of irritation or reaction.
