Can You Get Microblading Treatment While Pregnant?

Microblading

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at December 16th, 2021

Microblading is the process of an eyebrow artist adding semi-permanent ink into the superficial layers of the skin; the result is a change in the pigmentation around your brows to match the natural hair color of your eyebrows. A talented artist at a microblading salon will create cosmetic magic to leave you with intricately designed brows and fabulous results! If you’re expecting a child, you may be aware of the risks that come with regular tattoos. In that case, you could also be wondering if you should start or continue microblading. Waiting nine months can feel like a long time for regular clients without a touch-up. Even so, it’s important to protect yourself and your baby. Here’s everything you should know about this frequently asked question.

Microblading During Pregnancy

It’s highly recommended that you avoid microblading while pregnant. It may feel like a long time to go without a regular appointment, but it’s important to remember that microblading is considered cosmetic tattooing. Since there haven’t been any publically-released studies conducted on the ink’s chemicals, it could affect the fetus. Also, some pregnant people experience hyperpigmentation (melasma); this temporarily darkens the skin around your cheeks, mouth, and forehead, resulting in inaccurate ink color.

Potential Risks

There’s very little information about microblading’s effects and chemicals within the pigment. With that in mind, it’s best to look at microblading like a regular tattoo. If you don’t feel comfortable getting a tattoo during pregnancy, it’s best to wait on microblading. People should also avoid microblading if they choose to breastfeed their children. In the case of infection, it could be passed on to the baby. If you do choose to schedule a microblading appointment while pregnant and/or breastfeeding, please be aware of the risks:
  • The ink’s chemicals could negatively affect the fetus.
  • Numbing creams may contain epinephrine, which on some occasions, has been linked to fetal tachycardia and cardiac problems.
  • Pregnancy hormones may cause you to bleed more than usual, leading to unsatisfactory microblading results.
  • Bloating as a result of pregnancy may lead to inaccurate microblading results.
  • Improper disposal of sterile materials may increase your risk of contracting blood infections like Hepatitis B or HIV.

Always Do Your Research

If you choose to visit a microblading salon in Houston, thoroughly do your research. Ensure you’re working with a reputable, safe, and knowledgeable brow artist. They can help you decide if you should wait on microblading during pregnancy. Ask your artist about the chemicals in ink pigments, what metals are in ink, and what types of ink pigments are used. As always, we want to present you with the most accurate information available to help you determine if our treatments are right for you! Click the link to book your appointment!
