1. Houston Food Bank

The Houston Food Bank, a certified partner of Feeding America, helps connect food insecure individuals and communities with nutritious food to keep them fed. They’ve served over 1.1 million people in 18 different counties of Texas. The best part about this organization is that you have multiple ways to support it. First, you can simply raid your pantry and donate any canned or packaged food that you can spare. Or, you could head off to the store and gather up some much-needed items. You can find red donation barrels in most grocery stores in Houston to drop off your donations. If you don’t want to donate food, try donating funds! Simply go over to their website and donate as much as you can spare. If you’re looking for true volunteer opportunities in Houston, then this is your place, too. You can help organize a food drive with your company or organization or you can volunteer to sort through food to put together meal kits. This is a fun and active way to volunteer and provide people with food that they need this holiday season.

2. Houston Humane Society

If animals are more your thing, then you’re in the right place! Many animals in our area have been affected by the hurricanes of this season and seasons past. There are also many animals who have been neglected, abandoned, or abused that the Houston Humane Society has saved. This organization helps to care for and house these animals while trying to find new homes for them. Dogs and cats are very popular there, but they also have horses, birds, pigs, bunnies, and more! Big Brothers Big Sisters Houston lets you do exactly that. You’ll be matched with a child or teen in the Houston community. You’ll be matched based on interests, commonalities, background, location, and a variety of other factors to help make a match that will work for both you and your mentee! Then, you simply are there for them. You’ll do activities with them, help them through problems, and be a general support. This is one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities in Houston that can create relationships that last a lifetime.

4. Citizens Climate Lobby

Many people are starting to realize the importance of protecting the environment. If you’re passionate about nature or want to help do something about climate change, then Citizens Climate Lobby could be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you! This organization has hundreds of chapters around the world with one right here in Houston. Volunteers are involved in efforts to promote pro-environmental policies in our government.
