What Is Hyaluronic Acid? Uses, Benefits, and More

Facial, Skin Care

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at September 17th, 2020

From Gogi berry masks to cucumbers on your eyelids, skincare treatments often come and go. Some, however, prove their worth in their effectiveness and their widespread use. One of those things is hyaluronic acid. What is hyaluronic acid (HA)? Don’t worry, it’s not an acid that burns or damages or skin. In fact, it’s the exact opposite of that. Hyaluronic acid is found in products ranging from lotions to tinctures to injectables to face masks because of the amazing benefits it can bring to your skin. But, as always, before you dive into using a new product on your skin, we highly recommend doing your research to learn more about the effects, benefits, and uses of the product.  And that’s what we’re going to go over here! Keep reading to learn more about hyaluronic acid and why it’s so great for your skin.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound found within our bodies. Technically a type of sugar, HA’s main function is to help your joints, skin, and eyes retain moisture.  In fact, HA molecules can hold 1000 times their weight in water! This water retention helps keep your joints and skin moisturized while also reducing water loss. So if we already have this molecule inside our bodies, why would we need more? Well, just like with a number of other molecules (like collagen, for example), the amount of natural HA decreases as we age.  This means that as we get older, it’s more difficult to keep our skin properly moisturized, which can result in dry skin, wrinkles, fine lines, and more.

What Are the Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid?

As we mentioned earlier, HA provides your skin with much-needed moisture to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth & youthful. So, if your natural HA production is slowing thanks to age, or you simply have dry skin, HA can provide many benefits.  Using HA or products with HA within it can help to reduce these signs of aging. Studies show that HA can reduce fine lines & wrinkles along with improving the overall appearance and look of your skin. Another study found that using products containing HA is connected with increased collagen production, which can improve skin appearance and texture.

How Do You Use Hyaluronic Acid?

Natural HA decreases in the body as we age, which makes products with HA in them perfect for supplementing our natural supply.  Because hyaluronic acid is such a large molecule, topical products like lotions, serums, creams, tinctures, and face masks don’t allow HA to penetrate deep into your skin.  However, what it will do is sit on the top layers of your skin, drawing water to the surface. This also prevents the loss of moisture as well to help your skin to appear moisturized and youthful throughout the day (great for skin care in Houston!).  If you have dry skin or need deeper hydration, we’d recommend using a moisturizer that contains HA as well. This hydration will get to all the layers of your skin while providing you with the benefits of HA as well.  Injectables containing HA do exist to get that molecule into all the layers of your skin.

Are There Any Side Effects?

One of the best parts of hyaluronic acid is that there are little to no side effects. Rarely, people can have allergic reactions to HA and/or the products that it’s within.  Before using a new skincare product, we always suggest testing it on a small patch of skin to see how you will react to the new compounds and components.  HA is highly effective when combined with antioxidants, retinol, and vitamins in serums, lotions, etc. However, it is recommended that you only use HA in a single product during your skincare routine as that’s effective enough to see results. It’s also recommended that you don’t combine HA with low-pH acids (like glycolic acid) as this can cause the HA to break down, rendering it ineffective. Something else to be aware of is that HA pulls moisture from the air to sit on your skin for absorption throughout the day. However, this means if you use it in dry and/or arid weather, it can pull moisture out of your skin causing it to evaporate into the air and causing you to lose moisture.
