Aging Skin? 4 Tips for Older Adult Skin Care

Facial, Skin Care

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at June 2nd, 2020

Our society loves to make us believe that getting older, and, thus, older skin, is one of the worst fates that can happen to any living person. Obviously, here at Chic Lash Boutique, we have a much different outlook on aging skin. And what is that outlook, you might be wondering? Aging skin is beautiful!  We all get older, and there’s nothing wrong or abnormal about your skin aging with you. As we age, our collagen production and repair goes down, it becomes harder to stay moisturized, and we begin to see damage and wear & tear from years in the Houston sun. This means wrinkles, dryness, damage, age spots, and more can appear. Accepting that aging is a part of life is our first recommendation. Our second recommendation for those of you with aging skin (or at least older adults with skin that matches their age!) is to adjust your skincare routine, products, and treatments to match the needs of your skin. Here are 4 tips to help you do just that!

1. The Importance of Moisturizing

If you’ve noticed that as you’ve gotten older that your skin feels drier, you’re not alone. As we get older, our oil glands become much less active While this is good for reducing the frequency of pimples or acne, it also means that it’s much harder to keep your skin moisturized. This can lead to dryness, itchiness, and wrinkles. In order to keep your skin moisturized, it’s recommended that you use a more intense or heavier moisturizer than you might’ve done at a younger age.  Not only will this reduce dry and itchy skin (especially during the dry months during the year), but it can also help to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Sun Protection Is Essential

We’ve mentioned this in quite a few posts, and that’s for a reason. Sun protection is essential for keeping your skin smooth and youthful for as long as possible! This goes for all ages, but especially for adults as we get older. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide with one in five people developing skin cancer by the age of 70. With cases on the rise (the number of diagnoses tripling since the 1970s), it’s so important to protect your skin each and every day. Consider this: simply wearing a 15 SPF sunscreen every day reduces your risk of developing certain skin cancers by 40 percent and reduces the risk of developing melanoma (one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer) by 50 percent. And with skin cancer risk greatly increasing with age, it’s essential for adults to use sunscreen as often as possible. Not to mention that protecting yourself from sun exposure can reduce wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, dry skin, and more.

3. Facials and Skin Treatments

If you love your facials and beauty treatments, don’t fret. You can of course still get these things done as you get older! We recommend looking for facial services that focus on moisturizing and exfoliating your skin. Our skin usually dies and sheds a layer about every 28 days. As we age, this process gets a bit slower, which means aging skin can use a bit of help getting the layer of dead skin cells off with some nice exfoliation.  At Chic Lash Boutique, we also offer treatments and facial services that are great for aging skin. Our NuFace Therapy uses anti-aging microcurrent technology to reduce wrinkles and smooth & tone your skin texture and color.  If you want to lessen wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and uneven textures, microdermabrasion is an awesome service that can help you out. This will smooth out your skin, even out the skin tone & texture, and reduce the redness & coloration of sun damage, scars, age spots, and more. Of course these things won’t transport your skin back to when you were 22… but you don’t want that! All these things do is work with what you have to amplify your aging skin’s natural beauty.

4. Skin Supplements for Aging Skin

Along with a healthy and well-balanced diet, something that will greatly help your skincare as you get older is drinking plenty of water. Remember: aging skin dries out much more easily and loses moisture easily as well.  Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help keep your skin hydrated and healthy, reducing dryness, wrinkles, and more. Most doctors recommend 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water per day with more if you’re active or in a hot environment. Other skin supplements that can help aging skin include:
  • Retinoids. Creams and lotions with retinoids can help stimulate collagen production, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and overall provide even tone and texture to the skin. Prior to using retinoids, we recommend that you consult with a dermatologist. OTC retinoids and prescription retinoids are very different, and improper usage can damage your skin.
  • Omega-3s. These healthy fats are found in many types of seafood, nuts & seeds, plant oils, and in fortified foods. Besides helping to reduce redness and inflammation and provide your cells with necessary fatty acids, studies suggest that omega-3s can help keep skin smooth and moisturized as we age. Some evidence suggests it can also help protect the skin from sun damage and cancer.
  • Antioxidants. These powerful types of molecules help to fight against damage that comes from your environment, aging, the sun, and general wear and tear on the skin. Selenium, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C are all excellent sources of antioxidants as well as other beneficial effects for aging skin.

We hope that these tips for taking care of aging skin will help you feel confident and proud of the skin you’re in!
