Eyebrow Trends: From Past to Present!

Brow Lamination, Eyebrow Threading, Featured

At Chic Lash Boutique, we like to think that we’re pretty on-trend. Our experts follow the beauty industry closely in order to understand what looks are in, what looks are on their way out, and what new techniques & styles we can offer to our clients. Eyebrow trends come and go every few years with many of those trends defining the fashion and style from that time period. It’s fun (and sometimes mortifying) to look back on our old looks and wonder either, “How was that ever trendy?” or, “Wow, that was an awesome trend!” Let’s look at a few of our favorite eyebrow trends from the past decades to see just how far we’ve come.

1950s: Dramatic Brows with a High Arch

Throughout the 1920s and 30s, brows were pretty simple: slightly rounded, not too thick, not too thin, and not too pigmented. Most brows were heavily plucked and then filled in the brow pencil or liner to get that old Hollywood glamor look. But moving into the 1940s brought the more natural eyebrow trend. Women started to let their brows grow more naturally and, once we got into the 1950s, starlets like Marilyn Monroe popularized a more dramatic and glamorous brow. The trend during the 50s was dramatic and dark brows (usually filled in with pencil) with a high and square-like arch (see here).

1960s: Tamer Brows with Bolder Eyes and Lashes

As we get into the 60s, we see a sort of reversal compared to the decade before. 1960s eyebrow trends tended to be a bit tamer to allow the bolder and darker lashes & eye makeup shine.  The overall look was neat, somewhat thin, and very nicely groomed. Another trend that emerged around this time was completely shaving or plucking your brows before drawing them on with pencil as well as some slight feathering techniques that are starting to come back today!

1970s: Two Opposites — Very Thin or Very Natural

The 1970s had two very distinct trends that aligned well with the overall feel in the United States at the time. There were the hippies and the not-so-hippies. On the “hippie” side of things, the eyebrow trend tending to be very natural, unkempt, and bushier/fuller brows. However, the opposite eyebrow trend of super-thin brows with a large, rounded arch was also quite popular during this time to go along with the disco era.

Want natural-looking brows that are full and fluffy?

Brow lamination could be your best bet!

1980s: Caterpillar Brows

The 1980s brought bright colors, bold patterns, and overall “out there” aesthetics that are super distinctive to this day. Along with that same aesthetic came the “caterpillar brow” trend that spread from teenagers to movie stars alike.  Brooke Shields in the 1980s became a fashion and style icon with her beautiful, bold, and bushy eyebrows becoming her signature style that people around the world wanted for themselves. In the 80s, pairing those bold brows with your pink neon spandex and a boldly patterned windbreaker was as standard as brushing your teeth in the morning.

1990s and 2000s: Thin, Thin, Thin

It’s here where we reach a somewhat “dark age” of brows. After a decade of luscious and bushy brows, the next two decades would be dominated by ultra-thin and overly plucked eyebrows. In the 90s, these thin brows were often soft in their angles, reminiscent of the rounded and soft brows of the 20s and 30s.  As we moved into the 2000s, these thin brows took on more angular, sharp, and square-ish shapes that defined the decade. While many were able to pull off this look, many of us look back on our middle school and high school photos from these times and cringe.

Modern Eyebrow Trends

Modern eyebrow trends have seemingly combined the best of the 80s and the 90s.  Bold, natural, and full brows have been all the rage throughout the 2010s and continue to the present day.  From eyebrow threading for keeping things looking neat to brow lamination to get that natural and full look to microblading to make these higher maintenance brows easy to keep long-term, we are truly in the time of the brow!

Go with What You Love, Not Just What’s On Trend!

The modern-day is also seeing a lot more diversity in “acceptable” styles and trends. People are more willing to dress and look different than what’s exactly on-trend.  And that’s what we love here at Chic Lash Boutique: we love all styles. Whether that’s a Houston country style or a sleek & chic New York look, we’ve got you covered. Our expert lash and brow artists will talk with you about your desired style and look before getting started on any of our services.
