When Eyelash Extensions Go Wrong

Eyelash Extensions

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at January 2nd, 2019

Eyelash extensions can be beautiful and make your life so much easier. However, the possibility remains to end up with some bad eyelash extensions if you don’t properly do your research. Allergic reactions can occur if the wrong glue is selected or if you are unaware of what you’re allergic too. Most eyelash clients have minimal to no reaction. However, it is best to get a patch test prior to getting lashes if you are prone to sensitivity. When eyelash extensions go wrong, you can have an allergic reaction, resulting in eyes that are swollen, puffy, red, itchy, and painful. It’s best to prevent this from happening with a patch test. During the patch test, the artist will place a few lashes on each eye with glue and place a drop of glue on the inside of your wrist. If there is any reaction from either site, it is recommended that you do not get eyelash extensions. When Eyelash Extensions Go Wrong If you have had a reaction from one salon and are hoping to go to another for extensions, it is very important that you tell the new salon you had a previous reaction. With this information, the new salon can look up where you went to determine whether the reaction may have been caused by improper usage and placement of lashes or a direct reaction to the glue alone. Knowing the ingredients of the glue used is highly important to prevent any future reactions. Please note that once you have a reaction, it is highly likely that you will get another reaction and the second reaction can be worse than the first. In the event you have a reaction and end up with some bad eyelash extensions, it is recommended to take an antihistamine, follow up with cold compresses and contact your salon immediately. Once the swelling has subsided to a point where the lashes can be removed without increasing pain, you should go and get the lashes removed. Removing the extensions will help remove the source of irritation. Continue to take antihistamines to reduce swelling. Getting your eyelashes removed can also increase irritation during the removal as the agents used to dissolve the glue can be harsh. Make sure to rinse thoroughly with saline solution afterward and continue to use cold compresses. If swelling continues for more than a few hours after removal, please consult a physician.
